Hello everyone, I hope you are having a great week so far. I decided to do another writing tag this week in honor of Nanowrimo (I'm not actually participating, but I'm always writing). For those that don't know, I'm writing a four-book fantasy series and am writing the second book right now. My last tag for last week, Writing Tag, has more information about it if you would like to know more (just click the Writing Tag link).

1. What genres do you write?
📚 Fantasy and Contemporary

2. What setting gets you the most productive?
🦃 Sitting in my bedroom on my bed, at my desk, or at the kitchen table. I try to keep distractions away and I listen to a lot of music.

3. If you have multiple story ideas, how do you go about picking which one to start on first?
🦉 I usually will pick the story that feels the most important at the time. I have probably eight story ideas (that includes a four book series that I'm working on right now) at the moment.

4. Do you outline?
🍂 Yes, I always have outlined my stories and books.

5. Do you start your first draft with pen and paper, typewriter, or computer?
📚 Computer, but I will write scenes in a notebook with a lead pencil at times.

6. What do you do to get through writer's block?
🦃 I try to set aside time to write each day. Sometimes I don't actually write anything and that's okay. When I am in a writer's block I don't force myself to write because usually what I write during one is not good. I always try to write smaller ideas like poetry when I'm not feeling like writing in my books.

7. Do you format your project from the beginning or worry about that later?
🦉 Format it at the beginning. I try to make sure to have an idea of how it's going to go. That usually comes into the outline.

8. Do you edit as you go or when you've finished with the first draft?

🍂 Edit as I go along. Editing an 80,000-word document or more is daunting.

9. After finishing your drafts/manuscript how long do you give it a break before you start going back over it or do you give it a break at all?

📚 I believe I gave myself a week between finishing the manuscript of my first book before I started really reading and going over it. I did edit and revise as I wrote the novel though. So it wasn't like I really ever was not editing it.

10. Is there something that you prefer to do to get you through writing? (Playing music, tv, having your favorite drink, or food)

🦃 I like to listen to music when I'm writing. Also, I like to drink tea when writing.

11. Do you schedule your writing sessions?

🦉 I try to write at least an hour a day. I have never really scheduled it in.

12. Do you have a word count or chapter goals for your writing sessions?

🍂 Yes, 1000 words but lately I haven't been really stressing it. I believe I'm going to drop it down to 500 words a session and see where I get.

13. Are there any quirky things you do to make your projects more fun?

📚 Nope

14. Do you work on multiple projects at one time?

🦃 I used to when I was in college but I'm really not doing that right now. I really want to be able to focus on this book now. Though I will say that I have been coming up with ideas for later books in the series while writing the first and now the second book.
🦃 I believe that I will be working on a standalone book now along with my series. I will see what's going to happen.

15. How often do you research what you're writing?
🦉 It really depends on what I need research for. Right now, I have been doing research on castles, battlements, and weapons. It has been very informative.

16. How do you organize your projects?

🍂 I use Microsoft OneNote 2016 to make outlines and take notes about future books whether that be in this series or some other project. 

🍂 I have a notebook for notes that I take when I'm not on my computer. 

🍂 For writing, I use a program called Scrivener. It's probably the best program that I have found in my life.

17. Do you reward or punish yourself for achieving or missing out on your writing goals?

📚 No, I don't. The reward I get for finishing something is the fact that I finished it. It might sound silly for non-writers but my greatest gift from all of this is the knowledge that I have written a novel. It's an amazing feeling. 

📚 I don't punish myself because I don't like stressing myself out as long as I continue to write. I'm not going to let myself go for days without writing. 

18. Are there any works similar to your projects that you look for and use-for inspiration and/or comparison? 

🦃 I take inspiration from retellings- for the series I'm working on now.
🦃 I take inspiration from other contemporaries, songs, and my own poetry- for contemporaries that I'm working on.

19. How early do you wait to start looking for and hiring editors?

🦉 I have two best friends from college that have been great assets to my writing over the years. One of them has been helping me with my editing for my first novel. Both of my parents have read my book and helped me with ideas and editing.

20. If you've finished a first draft or a manuscript. Tell us how you felt afterwards. (Pick your favorite) If you're not through the first draft yet tell us how you're feeling about it at the moment. 

🍂 I have finished my manuscript for my first novel. As I have mentioned above, I am feeling proud of myself. It's an incredible feeling having finished a book. Also, being one-fourth of the way through my series. I am enjoying the experience and cannot wait to get further in my second.

In honor of November being Nanowrimo: National Novel Writing Month, I decided to do some writing tags each of my Tuesdays this month. Also, I'm going to spend some time just talking about my writing.

This year I started writing a four-book series, that I have had the idea for since 2014. I am right now working (slowly) on my second novel. It's a twisted retelling of classic stories such as Fairy Tales, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and Greek Mythology. I am trying to get the first book represented by an agent at the moment. This series has become everything to me and I'm excited to do this tag all about the characters in this story.

1. A crazy hacker's gone into your computer and has deleted all of your music, except for one song off of your writing playlist. Which song is it?-
🍂 "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" by Celine Dion. It's a favorite of mine and one of the longest songs. Luckily, I have all of it already backed up.

2. Your protagonist and antagonist have been paired by friends to go out to lunch together. Where do they go?
🍂 In my second book, I am planning on introducing a little family restaurant run by some trolls. That would be quite fun for them to go together. Poor Max.

3. You're crossing a bridge when the troll living under it stops you. He demands to read a chapter from your novel and won't let you cross otherwise. Which chapter do you give him?
🍂 I have written the first book in a series with retellings of classic books and tales. One of the chapters is actually focused on a goblin who owns a troll bridge (I won't say why he does). That would be the chapter I would choose.

4. Your friends have invited you out to a party. Surprise! All of your characters are there. Who do you choose to hang out with?
🍂 This is literally the hardest question for me. Well, if they are all there I would be able to meet them all, which would be the best day ever! The character I'd probably hang out with is Lyndell. We would have a great time dancing. The best party ever.

5. Crap. You left your car keys in your house, and you've (somehow) locked yourself out. Which of your characters picks the lock for you?
🍂 Zichwich would be perfect for picking locks. He's a trouble-making goblin. He'd know how to do it.

6. The zombie apocalypse is happening right now.  (It sucks.) Everyone is fleeing the planet and moving to Mars. ONE of your characters can go with you. Who do you choose?
🍂 Probably Arthur, who is first introduced in my second book. He's powerful and would probably be helpful in this situation.

7. You've been given the opportunity to travel to one place (town, building, landmark, country) in your book. Where do you go?
🍂 The White Kingdom, then I'd be able to go to the other worlds also.

8. You meet your main character and start a conversation with them. Problem is, you've got six words or less to do so. What do you say?
🍂 Everything's going to turn out okay. (At least I guess I would. I don't know)

9. Crazy acid rain is falling from the sky. Which of your characters would you use as an umbrella?
🍂 This is so easy, I would use the man in the magic mirror from the hunting cabin (makes sense if you read the book). The mirror would be perfect to hold off the rain. Also, it would not hurt him because the mirror is imperishable.

10. You're out at a restaurant with your main character and the time has come to order dessert. What do you order for them?
🍂 For Max, I'd order something with marshmallows. They have always been his favorite sweet since he was a child.

This has been one of my best reading weeks this year and I also got to read two of the books that I have been anticipating for a long time, John Green's Turtles All the Way Down and Rhett and Link's Book of Mythicality.

~ Brief Synopsis and General Thoughts ~

This book was mostly a disappointment for me. For a book said to be "An Indispensable Compendium of Myth and Magic" it really had nothing major of substance that would not be known to a fantasy writer or someone with knowledge of history. Really the fantasy topics are little and far in between. Most of the information that I read in this book was basically information that I learned in history classes, from historical fiction books, and fantasy books.

One section was actually useful for me, which is about the Anatomy of Castles. It's the only section of the book that I'll even use. I'm sure I could have found this information in some other source that would have been more detailed than what I have found here. This is a book that I bought years ago believing it to be useful for me in writing my book series. It's not.

~ The sections in the book ~

Below I will list the different parts of the book and what they contain. 

1.) Traditional Fantasy Cultures: talks about Christianity, Feudalism, Manorialism, The Social Order, Ecclesiastic Titles, Knighthood, and various terms about the Middle Ages

2.) World Cultures: talks about Africa, Asia, Mesoamerica, Other Mesoamerican Cultures, North America, Oceania, and South America

3.) Magic: contains: history, principles of magic, what magic does, ritual and ceremonial magic, secret societies, divination, building your own magical worlds (the list in this section might be useful for building basics of a story, but you can find questions like this anywhere. I have about twenty myself), written in the stars

4.) Witchcraft and Pagan Paths: How to recognize a witch, classical witchcraft, Gothic witchcraft, family or traditional witchcraft, dictionary of terms from witchcraft and magic, etc.

5.) Commerce, Trade and Law in Contemporary Fantasy: commerce, punishments, trade and barter

6.) Fantasy Races: dwarves, elves, fairies, giants, goblins and orcs, half-lings and hybrids, merfolk, trolls, minor races, Non-Western races, created races, Industrialization and Characterization.

7.) Creatures of Myth and Legend: contains an alphabetical listing of creatures (with about a paragraph of information for each creature) - Again this could be useful for someone who does not know about these creatures, but to write about them you would want/ need much more information than what this gives you.

8.) Dress and Costume: materials, colors, women's clothing, men's clothing, shoes, children's clothing, clergy, chastity belts

9.) Arms, Armor, and Armies: arms, armor, armies, beasts of war

10.) Anatomy of a Castle: castles and other fortifications, castle life, siege

~ Overall Opinions of the Book ~ 

I will say that I have not fully read every single part of this book. The reason I bought this book was for research and there are various aspects of it that are more important to me than others. Really, this focuses more on Medieval European concepts with little focus on the actual fantasy. I thought this would actually give tips towards writing, whether that be world building or creating a fantasy world. But what I actually received was a dry encyclopedia like book that gave very basic explanations of the topics. The images are okay inclusions in the book.

Fantasy writers, that believe this book will give you valuable pointers for writing fantasy, should really steer clear of this book. It's not worth the price and you will most likely not find what you are looking for. If you want to read something much more worthwhile, you should pick up Wonderbook: The Illustrated Guide to Creating Imaginative Fiction by Jeff Vandermeer. It's is meant for writing fantasy but you can get something out of it if you don't write fantasy. I will be doing a detailed review of this sometime in the near future.

🍁 Book 2: The Marvels by Brian Selznick 🍁

~ Brief Overview ~

This book is incredible. It was my fourth book that I have read of Brian Selznick's and it definitely my favorite of them all. This may actually have become my favorite book of the year. I never thought that I would love this book as much as I do. It's actually pretty incredible. 

For those new to Brian's books, I want to explain his formatting. Half or more than half of his books are told in illustrations. Probably some of the best illustrations I have seen in books ever. Then the other half is told in prose. Brian's books are always beautiful, but this exceeded that in so many ways. 

~ Synopsis ~
The Marvels tells two different stories that connect in such an amazing way. The first is told in about 400 pages of continuous pictures. It begins with a boy named Billy who is shipwrecked in 1766 and eventually finds work at a theater in England. Throughout this story we follow the rest of his family throughout the generations and their life as actors. This is up until 1900, when Leontes Marvel is banished from the theater.

The second part of this story takes place almost a century later, in 1990, with the runaway Joseph Jervis. He has come to England from his boarding school to try and find his uncle. Albert Nightingale, his uncle, is known to be a strange man living in the most stunningly beautiful house, that contains many secrets. Joseph becomes fascinated in this house and his uncle. He tries everything to figure out what has happened in the past with his family and also the house.

~ Overall Thoughts ~ 
Brian Selznick does an incredible job weaving each of his books together. This book was no exception. It was intriguing in the mystery aspects and a great adventure that I believe would be great for all ages. This was one incredible read for me and has become a ultimate favorite for me. He also based the story off of real people so that was another great aspect.

If you pick up any book that I recommend for you this should be the one. Also, it's a quick read so it will not take you too long.

🍁 Book 3: 365 Journal Writing Ideas 🍁

This was a quick read that had some really great writing prompts. I have been thinking of starting a daily journal next year and I'll probably use at least a couple of these. I like using prompts to play around with writing a bit. Some can be quite good, I just wish that this one had more examples that I enjoyed.

The formatting and layout of the book was somewhat disjointed. Also, the prompts are repetitive. This would be a great way to start journaling, but you might be able to find better prompts in other places.

A Field Guide to Curiosity, Creativity, and Tomfoolery

I loved reading this book and getting to know Rhett and Link more from it. I have been a Mytholical Beast for a little over three years and I am so happy to be able to read more about them and just about them.

This is the perfect book for any fans of Good Mythical Morning and Rhett and Link in general. I believe anybody though can get something out of this book. It is funny and heartwarming at parts. The section with their wives writing is great, it's probably one of my favorite parts of the book.

I really want to get the audiobook now to listen to them read it.

🍁 Book 5: Turtles All the Way Down 🍁

I was lucky enough to get a signed copy of the book. 

This book was incredible, though I'm not surprised. John Green has done it yet again. I read it in one sitting and was thoroughly engrossed the entire time. I have been a fan of John Green for about six years through his books and also as a Nerdfighter. I'm a very proud Nerdfighter. DFTBA (Don't Forget To Be Awesome)

~ The Plot ~
Sixteen year old Aza and her best friend Daisy, begin to pursue the mystery of the fugitive billionaire Russell Pickett's disappearance. Aza is reluctant but Daisy is insistent and there is a hundred- thousand dollar reward at stake. They both start to investigate and talk to an old friend of Aza's, Davis Pickett, the son of Russell Pickett.

Aza is living with the tightening spiral of thoughts that constantly plague her mind throughout her whole life. She does a great way of describing this on the first page saying that it's like she is in a fictional story, with someone controlling her every thought (very meta). She is trying to be a good daughter to her mother, a good friend, student, and live with a mental illness that controls a lot of her life.

~ The Characters ~
Aza was a great main character that I loved from the very beginning of this book. John definitly made her voice authentic. I believe that this book was incredible because of her character. The voice that he created made me realize what it felt like to live with OCD and anxiety a little more. It was hard to read at times because of it but also, so beautiful. I loved Aza so much.

Each of the characters also felt real. Aza's best friend Daisy made me think of my own friends. She's not afraid of telling Aza the truth when she needs to hear it but also is always there for her. Hearing about Daisy writing Star Wars fanfiction is some of the funniest parts of this book and I really enjoyed getting to know her character.

Aza's mom and parenting in general was another vital part of this book that I felt was important. She was always trying to figure out how to help her daughter. Her caring nature and attitude towards life was a great addition to this book.

Davis, one of the sons of Russell Pickett was a complex character himself. His father has fled and left Davis to care for not only himself but also his little brother, Noah. They do have servants but they are not around and both boys really do need a reliable guardian. Throughout the book, we see Davis try to protect his brother from the truth, but also him worry about the outcome of everything.

~ Overall Thoughts ~
It has been quite awhile since John has written a book but I feel that it was well worth the wait. I have been a fan of him for a long time and I am glad to say that this lived up to my overly high expectations of it. Sometimes I feel we hype things up too much, which will sometimes ruin the book. This could have been the case but John Green's book was written so beautifully. He writes with such a distinct voice and with so many stunning lines. I love his writing immensely and cannot get enough of it. The ending was so powerful and I'm still thinking about it three days later. I'll admit that I would love to read it again really soon. This has become my favorite John Green novel, right above Looking for Alaska. It's also a favorite of this year for me.

If you read any book the rest of this year please read this one. I believe that you will not regret it.

🍂 The Marvels by Brian Selznick- I just read this book for the first time this week and it has become one of my favorite books ever. It is beautifully written and illustrated and has a heartwarming story. It broke my heart a little reading it but I loved it the entire time.

3.) Fall is back to school season: share a non-fiction book that taught you something new.
🍂 Wonderbook by Jeff Vandermeer- this is a guide that gives tips for writing imaginative fiction. I'm not quite finished with it yet but I have learned so much from this book.

4.)  In order to keep warm, it's good to spend some time with the people we love: name a fictional family/household/friend-group that you'd like to be a part of.
🍂 I really always love the Weasleys. Molly and Arthur take Harry and Hermione into their home right away and made them family. They all are such great people (except for that darn Percy for like six years but he even turns around). It would be great to know them and be a part of their group.

5.)  The colorful leaves are piling up on the ground: show us a pile of fall-colored spines.

6.)  Fall is the perfect time for some storytelling by the fireside: share a book wherein somebody is telling a story.
🍂 Inkheart by Cornelia Funke- This was one of my favorite books when I was a kid. I have to finish this series soon.

7.) The nights are getting darker: share a dark, creepy read.
🍂 The Lovely Bones by Alice- This creeps me out, especially the beginning.

8.) The days are getting colder: name a short, heartwarming read that could warm up somebody's cold and rainy day.
🍂 Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick- His books are longer but they take little time to read because over half of the books are illustrated.

9. Fall returns every year: name an old favorite you'd like to return to soon. 
Oh and fall is definitely my favorite season. 
🍂 So I do plan on reading an old favorite again this year, the Harry Potter series, in December. I have a whole month planned.

20 Questions about being a Writer

I have been looking for something like this about writing for awhile. Really, I want to show my feelings about being a writer and just stuff like that in a post. I found this on Inkblot and IceBergs blog. It was originally on A Cathartic Method. 1. What type of writing do you do?

I write poetry, fiction, and some nonfiction. Mostly though I spend a lot of time writing fiction. Right at the moment I am writing a fantasy novel that is going to be part of a four part series.

2. What genres and/ or topics do you write about?

I write a lot of fantasy. I have also written contemporary stories but mainly I am focusing on fantasy at the moment. 

3. How long have you been writing? 

I think I wrote my first poem when I was eighth grade. Then in tenth grade I wrote my first short story. So about ten years consistently. 

4. Are you published?

Yes, I have had a poem published in a poetry anthology in 2014. Right now I am working on finishing my novel and will be hopefully publishing that. That is at least what I am hoping to accomplish. 

5. What was the first story you ever wrote? 

Okay, the first story that I actually wrote was when I was about eight. I was obsessed with butterflies and shopping at the time so I wrote a little book of this butterfly named Go-Go the butterfly who went to the mall. I still have that little book too.

6. Why do you write?

I write because I have story ideas that I have always wanted to read that have never been written. Writing to me has always been a way for me to cope with the good and bad in my life. In middle school and high school I would write poems as sort of journal entries. They were my way of getting out all my feelings. They were always so personal for me. I write because I love it so much. I write to let some of myself out to the world. I used to be very shy when I was younger and this was my way of getting out my opinions. Writing is a passion of mine and I adore the way I feel when I create worlds. I write because I have these characters that feel so real and have become a part of my life just as much as the real people in it. 

7. How do you find time to write?

To find the time to write you really need to set time aside to write. This might be difficult for some people and it has been for me at times during my life. But if you really do care about writing you have to. 

8. When and where are the best times to write? 

I like to write more mid-morning and and early afternoon. Mainly, I write at the kitchen table and also in my bedroom. 

9. Favorite food/drinks while writing?

Tea/ water. I really do not eat too much while writing. 

10. Your writing playlist?

I listen to so much different music. I listen to pop, 80s, country, rock, oldies, Disney music, Broadway, Glee covers, and so many other things. When I am writing I am always listening to music because it helps me focus on what I am doing. One of the songs that I basically listen to every time I am writing is "Burning Love" by Elvis Presley because I adore that song so much. I listen to this song constantly. So yeah. Music is one of my greatest loves.

11. What do family/friends/loved ones think of your writing?

My family and friends are supportive of my writing. They know that it is an important part of my life and try to be as helpful with it as they possibly can. 

12. Parts of writing you enjoy the most?

When I get really big ideas that grow overtime. I love sitting down not expecting to write a lot but then getting ten pages written. 

13. Parts of writing you find challenging?
Just the loss of ideas. When I draw a blank and am trying to figure out what to do next. For instance in the book I am writing now I have plenty of ideas for different parts of the plot but I am now having to fill in parts that I really have to think about.

14. What do you write with and on?
I write in a journal and with a lead pencil for basic notes and when I am not at home. Most of the time I write on my laptop at home. 

15. How do you overcome writer's block?
Usually I'll try write a little bit even during a writer's block. I feel like I should always try to write everyday. If I have writer's block though I will not try to force myself too much because it never really works. 

16. How do you motivate yourself to write?
I try to leave time during the day to write every single day. I like to listen to music which helps me focus on it. 

17. Authors who inspire you as a writer?
Lewis Carroll, J. K. Rowling, Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, Chris Colfer, Audrey Niffenger, 

18. Books that inspire you as a writer?
So these are going to go along with my authors above: Harry Potter, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, any Terry Pratchett book (especially his Discworld series), The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Land of Stories series (an absolute favorite of mine), The Time Traveler's Wife, and so many others. 

19. Best advice you've gotten as a writer?
I met the author and poet Nick Flynn at my university a few years ago. We got to talk to him and get our copies of his book signed. He told me to always keep writing and gave me a special little message in my book, "Be moved." Keep writing what is important to me and be moved by it. It was awesome to talk to him about my writing and just to have his advice as a keepsake. Also he is an amazing author and person. 

20. Writing goals this year?

Finish the novel I am writing now, edit it and then write the second novel. Big goals.

25 Bookish Facts About Me

1. I can read about 100 pages an hour depending on the book.
2. Hardbacks vs Paperbacks: I prefer hardbacks.
3. My favorite Genre is Fantasy but I do really love Contemporaries.
4. For Contemporaries I mostly read standalones.
5. For Fantasy I usually read series. 
6. I love drinking tea while reading and I'm not really sure why. 
7. Booksales are one of the things that I look forward to the most during the summer. 
8. I want to be a writer myself and am in the middle of writing a book at the moment. It's a fantasy story and I absolutely love writing it. 
9. I read hardbacks, paperbacks, audiobooks, and ebooks. 
10. Books that make me laugh are my favorites but I do really love books that make me sad.
11. One of the books that I absolutely loved from my childhood is Matilda. I want to eventually name a character or one of my children Matilda. 
12. I am obsessed with the Harry Potter series. It is my favorite series.
13. I have a hard time picking favorite books and series.
14. I love retellings and my favorite retellings are on Fairy Tales, Alice in Wonderland and Greek mythology.
15. I collect Alice in Wonderland books ( I have 7 editions of it), Harry Potter editions, and The Great Gatsby. 
16. My two favorite classics are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and The Great Gatsby. 
17. I read nonfiction, adult, young adult, middle grade, graphic novels, and some children books. I really love any type of book. They all interest me.

19. I have read almost a 1000 pages in a day. That day was crazy. This was a total of almost 3 books.
20. The book I have read the most is probably Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J. K. Rowling. I have read it around 6 or 7 times. It's my favorite of the series.
